lights can be art

October 22, 2017

Art isn't limited to paintings & sculptures....art can be many forms.  Including simply using lightbulbs in a creative way.

Meet SF artist Jim Campbell.  If you have visited SF MOMA, you know his work.  Remember that light installation as you walk in - that shows people walking around?  Here is a photo I took in 2011.

His next large SF project will be on top of our tallest building: Salesforce Tower.  Jim Campbell is working on the "crown" of the tower which will include 11,000 individual LED lights on the top 9 floors.  The lights will dance together at night to create unique images on top of this San Francisco skyscraper.  An interesting fact: the lights will face inward not outward to create a softer image; first time this has been done!  The outward facing lights are like what you see on the Times Square video screen.  It's fun to see people thinking outside the box.

Here's to SF for encouraging innovation & creativity!
