curtain rules

March 26, 2017

Thanks to Studio McGee for posting this informative photo and spot on rules for curtains.  Don't these look elegant and expensive?  Makes me realize I need to hang mine even higher and possibly get some rings.

Her rules are cut & pasted below.

1. When hanging drapes, I like to go as high as possible. As a general rule, I mount the hardware about 2-3 inches below the ceiling or crown molding - this will make both the room and window feel taller!

2. I take my drapery rods out about 4-6 inches (not including the finial). This extension helps the window appear wider and feel balanced.

3. For the most part, I always use drapery rings because they give the drapes a nice, finished look. However, I don't think rings are necessary in more informal spaces.

4. Custom drapes or not, make sure they are LINED! It makes the drapes hang better and look more expensive.

5. I prefer drapes to just "kiss" the floor or have a 1-2" break. A break is when the drapes buckle slightly at the bottom.

6. Lastly, white linen drapes are always my go-to choice! They look crisp and beautiful in every room. We often have custom drapes made, but when the window size allows (or budget dictates) my very favorite stock drapes are THESE from Pottery Barn.
