de Young art

Art in the de Young museum in San Francisco.  Anti-Mass, 2005, Cornelia Parker.

Wood charcoal (retrieved from an Alabama church destroyed by arson), nails, & wire.

This sculpture was constructed from the remains of a Southern Black Baptist Chursh destroyed by arsonists.  It appears to defy gravity, suggesting the temporarality of everything physical.  In the title, "mass" refers to both the elemental substance of the universe and the Catholic ritual, bringing together science and religion.  Think about this piece compared to a figurative image of a burning church or injured people.  The simplicity of the burnt wood evokes an entirely different experience and journey for the viewer.

affordable art: minted

Looking for affordable art?  Head to minted.com.  No, they don't just do invitations.  They also showcase art from independent artists!  Prints range in size and in price from $20-$220, or $50-$650 with a frame.  Unless you want larger mat, go ahead & order with a frame, as framing is always more expensive than you think it will be.  Some examples below.  Freshen up one room in your home with some new art!

weird architecture

I like weird art.  I also like weird architecture.  Look at the creativity below.  No cookie cutter here!  Which are you drawn to?

  1.  Vienna Museum of Modern Art (MUMOK):  officially on the list of the strangest buildings in the world due to the 'House Attack' by famous Austrian sculptor Erin Wurm.

  2. Dancing House of Ginger & Fred is the nickname given to the Nationale-Nederlanden building in Prague.  It was designed by Croatian-Czech architect Vlado Milunić in cooperation with renowned Canadian-American architect Frank Gehry.

  3. Casa de America:  This would technically qualify as a sculpture, but I couldn't resist the whimsical work of Madrid based artist Alicia-Martín.  5,000 books spill out like a waterfall of this traditional building in Madrid.  I love books, and I love the contrast.

  4. Montaña Mágica Lodge: a unique rainforest hotel in Chile hidden deep in a nature reserve shaped like a volcano.  Accessible only by the swinging rope bridge.

  5. Treehotel:  Located 60 kilometers south of the Arctic circle in Sweden, this stunning hide out, designed by Tham & Videgard architects, is made of light weight aluminum which is hung around the base of a single tree.

  6. Heydar Aliyev Center:  If you are familiar with architect Zaha Hadid, you will know right away that the graceful curves of this dazzling building in Azerbaijan are hers.  This structure will host the former soviet nation's cultural programs and looks like glossy white ribbons.

oscar de la renta at the de young

If you live in SF, go see the Oscar de la Renta exhibit at the de Young this spring.  One of the greatest American designers with Latin roots and European training will win you over.  The ultimate gentleman was known for his charm, kindness, and manners.  His feminine elegant style was influenced by the strong women in his life.  Oscar had 6 sisters, and speaks highly of his formidable mother & grandmother.

The exhibit takes you on his life path: born in the Dominican Republic, trained in Madrid and Paris, then establishing himself in New York.

The "Battle of Versailles" video, a French vs. American fashion competition from the 70's, reminded me of the French vs. American wine competition from the 70's.  Learn about his Spanish influence.  Gaze upon red carpet dresses worn by celebrities.  My favorites were the garden room (photo above) and the Vogue mohawk room.

The romantic dresses are tastefully extravagant, and the exhibit of 130 creations will be in SF until May 30.

where to buy art

Shopping for art can be overwhelming & confusing.  Art.com?  Expensive galleries in downtown?  Prints from Minted are a reasonably priced option, but I was looking for something that no one else would have.

Thank you to my sweet friend Carly Dow (Dow Interiors) for introducing me to Saatchi Art, a website that allows you to buy original artwork from artists around the world.  Paintings, photography, drawings, sculpture, even prints.  Prices range from $40-$40,000, so there is truly something for everyone.

This painting in my living room is by Thomas Saliot,  French artist who splits his time between Paris & Marrakech.  I am glad I discovered it!
